Today I've been listening to the a sermon series by Mark Driscoll on being Generous with what God has blessed us with. I would encourage everyone to watch it.
Be cautious with the Money that God allows you to have; don't spend more then you have. 9/10 people our age are in debt which takes them their whole life to get out of. Listen to this sermon series.

You are absolutely right. This is such a trap perpetuated by American culture. Our perception of "need" is so warped by the world that we cannot see the abundance that we literally through out in the garbage each day. I wish every American Christian could go to the slums of Mexico City or Monterrey, MX or even the Rio Grande Valley or even, Ennis, TX.
We need a reality check as to what need is and what generosity really looks like.
